What’s the deal with the contract?
Once you decide on a platform and narrator to create your audiobook with, you’ll be asked to sign a production contract.
The production contract mostly exists to protect both of us from bad actors. It offers courses of action should either of us be un-cooperative, and ensures I’ll be partially compensated for lost time if you decide to back out of the contract during the later stages (after the first 15 minutes has been approved).
Mostly though, the contract defines our roles and what is expected of each of us. So long as we’re both being cooperative, (which I intend to be,) the contract won’t matter too much, nor will the platform we’re working through need to step in.
If you’ve never had an audio-book made, I strongly encourage you to read the contract in its entirety. It’s not that long, and it lays out specifically what rights and protections you have. If you’re working on a platform like ACX, there are plenty of bad actors/scam artists you’ll need to be wary of.
Remember though- I am not a lawyer. Do your due diligence and take time to understand the contract yourself.
